How I keep things sustainable at mifufu

Ethical fashion, to me, really is the only fashion that should exist. Our planet cannot cope with the demands of modern consumerism that fast fashion has created. I started making recycled outerwear in 2020, I was pregnant and the pandemic meant I had a lot more free time. I had the intention of making these coats for a while but I never had the time, so when the pandemic hit I finally had an opportunity to develop my idea into a reality, after leaving my full-time job in hospitality.

When i was studying, and particularly in my final year, i knew that once I graduated I wanted to launch my own label. And I knew that I had to do it ethically. At first I used up the remainder of my grad collection fabrics which werent natural fibres - something I wish I had considered more when I was selecting fabrics in Hong Kong. But I used almost every last scrap. Then, I could source natural fibres.

These days, I source 100% recycled fabrics to use. I source the fabrics from ebay, gumtree, secondhand stores, and marketplace. I’m also a very involved member of a number of vintage fabric pages on social media! Something I never even knew existed until I became a fully fledged recycled fashion designer.

A coat is usually made from a wool blanket, and lined using either a deadstock fabric sourced from somewhere (sometimes I’m lucky and I find rolls of fabric in opshops), or from vintage sheets that are inspected and cleaned before preparation.

Everything you see on my website is made by me. I do 100% of everything, which means your piece is made by someone getting paid a fair wage. No carbon emissions through the back-and-forth of factory work or outsourcing.

Your piece is made to last. Proper care for your mifufu! piece can be found in this article!
